I had high hopes, but sadly I can't reccommend this paint... I had high hopes, but sadly I can't reccommend this paint...having done plenty of research into a paint for our new front door, we settled on a Farrow & Ball dark primer and exterior drawing room blue colour. We followed the instructions to the letter, using the right preparation process, primers and sanding and surace cleaning. This paint comes out of the tin seemingly fine but goes onto a clean surface lumpy, and gunges up quickly throughout application. We sanded it back to have a second pass, but sadly this didn't improve matters. We now have a front door in a rather nice blue but very rough finish, so will have to sand it right back again and apply another manufacturers oil-based paint to achieve the desired high quality finish. I'd love to have had positive things to say about this as many friends have recommend the F&B range. I have since however discussed the issue with many trade painters and they tend to F&B paints, chossing other oil-based brands that provide a smoother finish. I'd very much like the opportunity to explore a refund with F&B which would somehwhat take the edge off this experience and time wasted. Here's hoping someone could contact me to have a chat about it. I hope others fare better but it's worth trying a few brands for contrasting results before you cover your whole door in this F&B paint. All the best, Al May 29, 2014
Unparalleled Paint Every single person who sees this color in my home declares it the most beautiful color they have ever seen. It is gorgeous. I love it and I love how it changes. I have never seen a paint that is so dynamic. It's almost as if it's alive. As the light changes it can go from cobalt to lavendar to purple to royal blue. It is not dark at all! I tried 26 different paint colors before I decided on this paint color. It was worth it, to have found this color. Yes, it requires an experienced painter to apply this, but that is the way of dark paints. This paint is phenomenal. The color is breathtaking. This is the first time I've ever actually written an online review, that's how unbelievable this color is. November 30, 2013
A dream to paint with, a dream to look at We love F&B paints, and the deep intensity of the matt is gorgeous. The consistency is wonderful - like double cream. I couldn't find this colour in any shop in London, so I ordered it online. It was delivered the next day. Easy and cheaper - I'll be doing that again! September 8, 2013
Very disappointing Bought a sample pot and was very disappointed with the application and overall quality. The colour represented on the website is a good reflection of he pigment which I guess is an upside. Have used F&B in the past and the paint was great, so drawing room blue was a bit of surprise. Beautiful colour but really poor finish This paint is a lovely colour but I'm not happy with the end result. I read the advice from F&B and followed the instructions to the letter using the dark tones undercoat x 2 and then 2x layers of Drawing Room Blue Estate Emulsion carefully avoiding 'overpainting'. The colour looked spectacular but in daylight the walls had a shiny streakyness all over. I decided to try another coat but it now looks even worse. I painted most of room this colour #it's a large bedroom# but I can't face painting it again so I'm just going to have to put up with the finish. It does feel disappointing to get this kind of finish after putting all that work in. June 19, 2013
Lovely colour, not so good paint This review is in reference to the full sized can we bought and used, not the sample pot. I cannot fault the colour which is great, however, in terms of the quality, I am extremely disappointed. After 3 coats, you can still see the lines between where we painted the edges/corners of the wall with the main bulk of the wall. We have used frog tape for years on various brands of paint to achieve clean edges and found on this paint it peeled it off the walls when we removed the tape! This has never happened before. 2 weeks afterwards we sanded the floors in the room and the dust clung to the paint which we then had to wipe down, and now there are big cleaning marks on the wall (similar to when you clean windows). This did not happen on the adjacent wall which was subject to the same conditions, which was painted in homebase own brand paint, £15 for 10l! The colour schemes (hence some of the 'fair' ratings) are lovely but I would not use/recommend this paint again. Very dissapointed April 11, 2013
Super fine We painted our little shower room with the modern emulsion, then used a gloss to create a splash back behind the sink and loo. The colour has created drama and interest to a dull functional room. The contrasting finishes catch the eye and are often commented on. I found it easy to apply and got a superb even colour. This was my first dabble with f&b....I have gone on to decorate the whole house and have now moved out of doors..... February 28, 2013
Beautiful and a smooth finish when watered down a little I've painted our dining room entirely in this colour with pointing woodwork and ceiling and it looks wonderful. It brings out the warmth in mahogany furniture particuarly well. We found that the solution to a streaky finish (especially when painting with a brush) was to water the paint down a bit. I think the problem is that the paint dries so quickly, that it leaves streaks because it's drying both on the wall and on the brush. With a bit of water, I was able to get full, smooth coverage in two coats, even without an undercoat and over a light shade of paint. October 6, 2012

A traditional salon blue, this colours clean hue is reminiscent of the pigment cobalt, used by artists and discerning decorators ever since its discovery in the 19th century. Dark Tones Undercoat.
